Marathasa Wines is a state-of-the-art winery located in the charming Oikos village in the Marathasa Valley, high in the Trodos Mountains at 1,125 meters above sea level. Officially opened in June 2023, this award-winning facility represents a modern vision for revitalizing Cyprus’ viticultural heritage. The winery was established by John Papadouris, whose family hails from the nearby village of Kalopanayiotis and whose grandfather was a wine merchant. The project involved replanting abandoned vineyards and establishing new ones across 13 hectares of terraced vineyards, all within 10 minutes’ driving distance of the winery. The distinctive architecture, inspired by the local monastery with its three domes, features high-ceilinged structures topped by latticed wooden roofs, creating an extraordinary setting that overlooks the surrounding mountains and valleys.
Marathasa Wines is dedicated to producing fine Cypriot wines exclusively from their own Marathasa-grown grapes, which are hand-harvested and processed at the winery. Under the guidance of winemaker Viktor Finopoulos, who has worked harvests in renowned regions including Alentejo, Chablis, and Marlborough, the winery produces a diverse range of wines including local varietals such as Xynisteri, Yiannoudi, and Syrah, alongside international classics like Sauvignon Blanc and Moschofilero. The vineyard’s high altitude and north-facing slopes help temper Cyprus’ intense summer heat, while the region’s unique volcanic soil composition and three main geological formations contribute to the distinctive character of the wines.
Visitors are welcome to experience the winery through daily walking tours and wine tastings, available Tuesday through Sunday from 11:00 AM to 6:30 PM (closed Mondays). Reservations are necessary, especially for weekend visits. The winery also offers private event spaces for gatherings and special occasions, along with a wine shop featuring their Classic and Limited Edition collections. Located approximately one hour from Nicosia and 1 hour 15 minutes from Limassol.
