Nestled in the mountain village of Kyperounta in the heart of the Pitsilia region, Xenofontos Methynaios Winery is one of Cyprus’s most intimate and authentic wine estates. With a family tradition stretching back to the early 1900s and now in its fourth generation, the winery is today guided by oenologist Christodoulos Xenofontos, who oversees every aspect of production with an unwavering commitment to quality.

A Micro-Winery with a Grand Terroir

At over 1,200 metres above sea level, the Kyperounta area enjoys a distinctive high-altitude microclimate, cool nights, long growing seasons, and pure mountain air that naturally slow the ripening of the grapes. The estate owns 15 hectares of vineyards and also works with trusted cooperating growers whose vines range from 5 to over 80 years old, some of the oldest parcels yielding tiny quantities of intensely flavoured fruit. Everything is vinified and bottled on-site in a compact 45 m² cellar in the village, small in size, but the source of truly remarkable wines.

The Wines

Production is limited to no more than 5,000 bottles per year, a deliberate choice that ensures hands-on attention at every stage. The range showcases both indigenous Cypriot and international varieties:

  • White – A dry Xynisteri with aromas of apple, peach, and citrus, rich on the palate with bright acidity and a refreshing grapefruit finish.
  • Rosé – Crafted from Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon, offering vivid notes of sour cherry and strawberry with a long, lively finish.
  • Red – Cabernet Sauvignon blended with indigenous Maratheftiko and Mavro Ambelissimo, delivering deep ruby colour, ripe red fruits, and well-integrated tannins.

The flagship red, named “Kyperounta”, is a particular highlight, a wine that captures the strength and soul of Cyprus’s mountain vineyards.

Award-Winning Quality

In 2025, the winery’s Xynisteri earned a Bronze Medal at the prestigious Thessaloniki International Wine Competition, scoring 87/100, an impressive achievement for a micro-producer and a testament to the extraordinary potential of this native Cypriot variety grown at altitude.
